WHAT IS ADA COMPLIANCE?

The American Disabilities Act, passed by Congress in 1990, prohibits discrimination based on disability. While first applied to physical products and commodities, this has in the recent years also come into effect regarding digital products, and a rise of lawsuits have followed – attacking websites that are not offering their users options for accessibility.

OPTIONS FOR ACCESSIBILITY

To comply with the American Disability Act (ADA), a website must include several options for accessibility.

Perceivable

Information and user interface components must be presented in a way that users can perceive. Size and color of font are some examples.

Understandable

Users must be able to understand how to operate your interface or website, as well as any information provided on your site.

Operable

Users must be able to operate the interface or navigate around your website using for example a keyboard instead of a mouse.

Robust

Content must be robust enough that it can be interpreted reliably by a wide variety of user agents, including assistive technologies such as text-to-speech.

WHY IT MATTERS TO YOU

On the one side, you want to make sure that all visitors to your website can have a good user experience, including those with disabilities. On the other hand, you want to protect yourself financially. Websites that are not ADA compliant can be fined with up to $75.000 for a first-time violation, and up to $150.000 for any subsequent violations.
